The photo above was taken at Cape Blanco, south of Bandon, Oregon (June 2006). In the foreground you can see a formation of marine fossils that were buried about 22,000 years ago (Pleistocene). They are unique because they are situated in their life assemblage, which means they were probably buried alive.

In the distance you can see the Cape Blanco Lighthouse. Why do you think it was important for the Lighthouse builders to know something about geology?
