The photo above was taken from the highest point above the John Day Fossil Monument Painted Hills Unit. There is a public trail that is accessible when the park is open. It provides a stunning 360 degree view of one of Oregon's most picturesque places. It's most dramatic on sunny days when the sun is low in the sky. Notice the colorful banding caused by different minerals. Also notice the effects erosion has on the landscape.

Look at the curving "ribbon-like" white line at the bottom of the hill. What is that? Why is is curving like that? What does that say about the land (terrane)?
